Lane joined the Royal Air Force in 1936, and upon completing his training, he was assigned to No. 19 Squadron shortly before World War II, flying a Spitfire against the Germans. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) for his bravery and outstanding piloting skills at the Battle of Dunkirk in May 1940. At the Battle of Britain in September of the same year, Lane's leadership qualities were recognized, and he was promoted to Squadron Commander of No. 19 Squadron.
