Fans of experimental aircraft are joyous at the release of the latest release from Skunkmodels Workship, the super-cool F-16XL Experimental Fighter in 1/48 scale! The XL concept was a development of the F-16, with the addition of a cranked-arrow delta wing. It could carry twice the ordnance of the F-16, and was fitted with a total of 27 hardpoints. The F-16XL was originally conceived as a technology demonstrator, but later was entered in the United States Air Force's Enhanced Tactical Fighter competition, where it lost to the F-15E Strike Eagle. Several years after the two prototypes were retired, they were turned over to NASA for additional aeronautical research.
Skunkmodels Workshop's stunning new kit of the F-16XL features great detail and attention to accuracy, with the Skunkmodel staff working tirelessly to obtain references and working with experts to ensure the kit is the best it can be. The kit features separately molded control surfaces and a massive weapons set, which includes the following:
AIM-9M/X Sidewinder Missiles
AIM-120B/C AMRAAM Missiles
AGM-65 Maverick Missiles
GBU-24 Paveway III Bombs
GBU-31 JDAM Bombs
GBU-12 Paveway II Bombs
GBU-38 JDAM Bombs
Mk. 82 Snake Eye Bombs w/MER
AN/AAQ-13/14 LARTIN Pod
Now that's some ordnance!
The kit features over 280 parts, measures 34cm long with a wingspan of 21.8cm. Markings are included for 4 aircraft, including the NASA version.
